When to Bet the River
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008Betting the river at the opportune moment can win you a jackpot. However, if you strike at a wrong time, you lose and also make your opponent win the game. Simply thinking that you have a good hand does not mean that you need to bet or raise the river. Often you bet while your opponent folds and you are left in the lurch without winning a single pound.
If you feel that you can win the game – say at least 50 percent chance — when your opponent calls, betting is okay. The success in betting the river lies in your hoping to win the pot. Here, checking can fetch you some cash rather than betting.
When would you bet the river then? – Perhaps, when you play against an aggressive player who calls even with weak pairs. An aggressive player with a king would not bet the river but raise during the flop or the turn. It is likely that the opponent has a weak pair. In this case, you have 50 percent chance to win the game.
However, note that you need more than 50 percent chance to win the game where you have called and the opponent has a good hand. Your opponent might raise at that opportune moment and steal your money.
When you have just one opponent on the river with a good hand, you need to tread cautiously. Here, look for chances where you can win on a showdown. Analyse areas where your opponent would raise and you are in a position to call. Also, would your contender check with a losing hand if you bet? Or, would he bet a weaker hand if you checked?
So, after analysis you might come to an entirely different solution. Bet the river indeed. But, think twice before you do.
